MFA Music Composition

ABOUT THE MUSIC COMPOSITION PROGRAM

In the tradition of its renowned graduate degree programs in other fields of artistic practice, VCFA has created an MFA in Music Composition.  Unlike traditional Masters in music programs, our low residency approach requires only one week of campus residence for each six-month semester and matches each student with a gifted faculty mentor for one-on-one independent study. The first graduate music degree program of its kind in the country, the program is now accepting applications for the February 2012 residency.

Vermont College of Fine Art’s MFA Program in Music Composition invites musicians to infuse their creativity with new energy and ideas, enriching their vitality as artists and redefining themselves as composers. The program carves out space in the lives of professional musicians and music teachers for inquiry and experimentation as well as research and critique, making room for both the exploration and the refinement of their craft. Students not only produce work but also hear and share the music they write with a supportive, engaged community of peers and distinguished faculty. Through the program’s low-residency, self-designed study model, students define their own paths in Contemporary Composition, Electronic Music, Jazz, Scoring for Media, or Songwriting, simultaneously engaged in their working lives and their artistic practice.

WHAT’S INVOLVED

  • 60 credits earned over the course of two years
  • Four semesters of self-designed study
  • Five week-long residencies: one at the beginning of each semester and a culminating graduation residency
