Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA), a national center for low-residency graduate education in the arts, has mounted an unprecedented exhibit of Swiss posters during the week-long residency of its newest Master of Fine Arts program in Graphic Design.
The exhibition is made possible by the generous donations of artist Tom Strong and swissnex Boston, Consulate of Switzerland.
“Swiss Poster Design: 100 Posters from 50+ Years .”
This powerful exhibition includes more than 100 posters from the past 50 years of Swiss design and features a spectacular range of iconic and influential posters from some of the most important designers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Eminent designers included in the show range from mid-century masters like Armin Hofmann, Herbert Matter, Bruno Monguzzi, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Emil Ruder, and Wolfgang Weingart to contemporary notables including Stefan Sagmeister, Ralph Schraivogel, and Martin Woodtli. The exhibition is curated by VCFA faculty members Matthew Monk and Silas Munro, from the collection of designer Thomas Strong of New Haven, Connecticut, whose generosity makes this exhibition possible.
The exhibit is being generously sponsored by swissnex Boston / Consulate of Switzerland
“The Swiss penchant for order and efficiency imposes a powerful influence on what we think of today as Swiss design,” said Matthew Monk, faculty chair of the VCFA MFA in Graphic Design program. “Swiss designers have embraced the medium of the poster, maximizing the opportunities to experiment with its endless possibilities, as many will see for themselves in this remarkable exhibition.”
It will be located in the VCFA Gymnasium building, at the corner of College and East State Streets.
