It's Okay To Be Tiny

This was the tiny, 5-word mantra for a group of 12 college students who gathered recently on the VCFA campus to participate in Yestermorrow Design/Build School’s first Undergraduate Semester in Sustainable Design/Build. Over 14 weeks, students together with a talented faculty of architects and master craftsmen built an environmentally friendly, C-shaped house which included a shower with running hot water and even a large bed. Yestermorrow’s immersive semester is intended to give students hands-on experience in the collaborative process of designing and building an architecturally innovative structure. This year’s course addressed various issues and topics in contemporary sustainable architecture practice through the lens of a “Tiny House.”

An open house was held earlier this month, and while the structure has since been moved to its new home in New York, its small footprint had a big impact on our community. To learn more about the tiny house, visit the project’s website here.

"The educational model was brave, fearless, and radical, and made it possible for me to connect all the disparate areas of my life and my art, within a community I was deeply invested in."
