Dont Rhine co-founded the sound art collective Ultra-red (www.ultrared.org) in 1994. Ultra-red has presented performances and installations at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Tate Britain, and the KwaZulu-Natal Society for Arts Gallery in Durban, South Africa. In Spring 2009, Ultra-red conducted a three-month residency and exhibition at the new art gallery Raven Row in London as well as presenting work at the Lentos Kunstmuseum in Lintz, Austria, and the ICA in London. Rhine has contributed to numerous Ultra-red publications as well as over a dozen sound recordings for labels in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. He also curates the collective's online fair-use record label, Public Record (www.publicrec.org). Rhine's participation in Ultra-red is deeply informed by twenty years of AIDS activism. In 2007, he was awarded a California Community Foundation mid-career fellowship for visual artists.
