Profile

Sereina Rothenberger (1981) runs together with David Schatz the Zurich-based studio Hammer, working across the fields of art direction and graphic design.

Sereina holds a professorship at the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe, Germany, where she was also the head of the graphic design department. Since 2016, Sereina has been a faculty members of the MFA Program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts and since 2020 she is one of the Co-Chairs. Sereina is an advisor at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht and since 2022 the jury president of the Most Beautiful Swiss Book competition.

Hammer’s design language is distinct yet their work is wide-ranging and polymorphous. They are convinced that there is rarely an archetypal design solution, and that the goal of a designer is to find a specific tune and timbre for each project, be it deliberate artlessness, deploying vernacular typography or creating obsessive and accurate patterns. The aspect that unites all of their projects is a strong belief in a participatory design method.
