Multiple “premiere parties” and events featuring music written by VCFA students and performed by world-class musicians filled the week. Even if you missed those, you can still catch the encore!
ENCORE PREMIERE PARTIES
VCFA hosts three different ensembles this winter, premiering pieces written by our MFA in Music Composition students that reflect a widely versatile cross-section of approaches to new music. The ensembles are:
- Tuesday, February 16, at 8 pm ET | A Voice-Flute-Piano trio—Anna Elder, soprano; Lindsey Goodman, flute; Robert Frankenberry, piano
- Wednesday, February 17, at 8 pm ET | Trio Lunaire—Jennifer Choi, violin; Lev Zhurbin, viola and fadolín; Wendy Law, cello
- Thursday, February 18, at 8 pm ET | The Kite Quartet—Ken Thomson, Peter Hess, Alex Hamlin, Ed RosenBerg (saxophones)
These performances will be posted on the MFA in Music Composition YouTube page and can be viewed starting at the times posted above and for at least 24 hours following that time.
PAST EVENTS
FILM & MEDIA MUSIC FESTIVAL
Sunday, February 7, at 8 pm ET | In visual media, music is often the secret partner in storytelling, embodying the internal states of the characters in the narrative. This event will feature a variety of approaches to the marriage of music to picture, as offered by VCFA students, faculty, and alumnx—from fiction films, to animation, video art, webisodes, documentaries, game scores, and jingles. The intent is to explore and celebrate the diversity of music-to-picture relationships.
ELECTRONIC MUSIC SHOWCASE
Monday, February 8, at 8 pm ET | An evening of electronic sound and multimedia: VCFA students and faculty perform new work for instruments with live electronic sound and video.
COMPOSER/IMPROVISER SHOWCASE
Monday, February 8, immediately following the Electronic Music Showcase | This event highlights VCFA composer-improvisers’ work whose defining elements reside in performance by improvising musicians. Performances will include the composer as improviser.
COMPOSER/PERFORMER SHOWCASE
Wednesday, February 10, at 8 pm ET | An evening featuring work which, though performable by anyone, is illuminated by being heard in the composer’s hand/voice/mind.
SONGWRITING SHOWCASE
Friday, February 12, at 8 pm | The Songwriting Showcase highlights the diverse songwriting and performing talents of the students, alumnx, and faculty of VCFA’s MFA in Music Composition.
DIANE MOSER MEMORIAL CONCERT
Saturday, February 13, at 3 pm | An afternoon of music in honor of Diane Moser, MFA in Music Composition faculty member, who passed away on December 17, 2020.
